It depends. Every business is different but if your marketing, sales or support is anyhow dependent on digital channels, having common, shared metrics would not hurt. And it does not have to be digital only but often is.
We’ve been involved with billion dollar businesses that are entirely driven by KPIs. There are only limited set of metrics they do follow on board and C-level. It happens for a reason, it is very much easier to follow the state of the operations, business and realization of predictions and forecasts when you know what to follow.
KPI framework may sound a scary monster but eventually those are never too complex. They should not be. If it takes extra effort to explain the performance indicators to anyone those are probably too complex. As the KPIs usually are used to drive every operation and business decision throughout the organization, every member of it should understand what those metrics, how those are calculated and what affects to figures.
